Tales of History with Vanessa Cole

“Cradle of the Confederate”

With the bombardment of Fort Sumter, the Civil War began. Many residents fled the area going to Columbia or to the upstate areas of Greenville and Spartanburg. But many decided to stay and it would be four years of hardships. There was a lack of food, goods, and supplies, not to mention living under the constant bombardment of Union shells hitting the city for over a year and a half. These are the stories of those who stayed and what was going on in Charleston after Fort Sumter.
