Here at Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community, we make it our mission to give back. It is a part of our culture – the final line of our mission statement states – We reach out with a generous spirit. We believe it is a blessing to have such giving residents, but also, we are blessed with team members who also possess a giving heart. Bishop Gadsden team members embody the mission of giving here by participating in the Employee Giving Program.
What is the Employee Giving Program?
Each year, team members choose whether to personally support the various giving opportunities offered by and for Bishop Gadsden. If they choose to give, they can select the fund that they would like to support. Team members can choose to give to the Charitable Fund, the Employee Assistance Fund or the Strongheart Employee Education Scholarship. Team members can donate one, two or all three of the opportunities for giving.
By giving to any of these funds, team members automatically become part of the Employee Giving Program. After giving, participants become a “Shining Star,” which indicates that they have given. These team members wear a star pin on their name badge to show that they chose to support the mission of Bishop Gadsden. Team members are recognized for the number of consecutive years in which they have given.
How else do Shining Stars give?
In addition to giving to the Bishop Gadsden community, team members have multiple opportunities throughout the year to give to outside organizations. This year, team members participated in their own Generous Spirit Bingo. Our Bingo events are special because residents carefully select outside non-profit organizations who applied for a Bishop Gadsden Charitable Mission Grant. Bishop Gadsden supports this organization at all Bingo events that season. Both team members and residents work together to support the chosen non-profit organizations in the Charleston community.
In addition to Bingo, team members have the opportunity to give by helping with Meals on Wheels events and food drives. We also hold toy drives that benefit Sea Island Habitat for Humanity and Toys for Tots. Team members also love some healthy competition and participate in charitable chili cook-offs, baking competitions, crock-pot cook-offs, auctions, etc.
To continue positive competition, team members can choose to participate in a Spirit Day. With a donation, team members can wear jeans and their favorite teams’ colors to participate on this day. Nothing brings out healthy competition like sitting next to your coworker wearing your rival’s jersey.
What is in it for the Shining Stars?
Every fall, Shining Star team members have a party thrown by the Office of Charitable Giving and Communications. This event recognizes the dedication our team members have to the Bishop Gadsden Community and the Charleston community as a whole. Each party has a different theme and always includes food and prizes for the team members present. Shining Stars include team members on each of Bishop Gadsden’s three shifts, so we stagger times each year so everyone can attend.
While a party and recognition is appreciated, it is clear the team members of Bishop Gadsden support both the mission because they care. They care about the community they work-in, the people they work with, and the residents they support each and every day.
Showing appreciation for those who give back is a top priority here at Bishop Gadsden. Happy team members is what makes a happy place to live and work, and that is what we are here to do.
