At Bishop Gadsden, it is a part of our mission to reach out with a generous spirit, and we proceed with that mindset every day. On Friday, July 19, staff and residents took part in some summer fun for Generous Spirit Bingo. Generous Spirit Bingo is a bingo event we put on three times a year for both Bishop Gadsden Team Members and residents to give back to charities in the Charleston community. This summer’s event supported FreshStart Visions, a local non-profit that supports individuals leaving incarceration and assisting them in successfully coming back into society.
FreshStart Visions is a North Charleston-based non-profit started by Executive Director and Founder Tim Terry. After leaving prison in 2002, Tim devoted his time to developing a faith-based program to help ex-offenders re-enter society and become “law-abiding, tax-paying citizens.” Tim’s personal connection to the inmates allows him to relate to them on an emotional level, display how his faith helped him reconcile with both this family and community, and show how a supportive community is key to becoming a member of society once again. Tim, his daughter, and grandson were able to join us for the event and share both his story and FreshStart Visions’ story with residents, as well as help with bingo.
The Generous Spirit Bingo hype begins with bingo card sales starting the Monday before bingo. With the help of generous resident volunteers and their wonderful sales talent, bingo cards sell out almost every time. Bingo cards were sold at both lunchtime and happy hour to ensure as many residents and staff members as possible have the chance to buy as many cards as they would like. Cards sell for $5.00 per card or five cards for $20 because we all love a good deal.
At noon on Friday, we welcomed Bishop Gadsden Team Members in Blackmer Hall for Staff Generous Spirit Bingo. Since it was during lunch, the team members enjoyed pizza and summer-themed bingo prizes to take home. That evening, almost 90 residents gathered in Blackmer Hall with many others leaving donations who were not able to attend. Together, both staff and residents raised $2,700 for FreshStart Visions.
Since beginning Generous Spirit Bingo in 2011, Bishop Gadsden has donated more than $50,000 to Charleston area non-profit organizations. We work to live out our mission every day in our both Bishop Gadsden Community and local Charleston community, and continue to devote ourselves to giving back. Thank you to everyone who came out and played or donated to FreshStart Visions.
