BG Eats Out: Yous Guys

By Adelaide Wallinger

The Gadsden GAB is a monthly publication that’s written by BG residents, for BG residents. Every two weeks, we’ll feature an article from the GAB on the Bishop Gadsden website. To read more, you can read the entire April edition here.

You’ll find YOUS GUYS, not far from BG, a great sandwich shop to order takeout classics like Philly cheesesteaks, hoagies, hot sandwiches, and salads – courtesy of Donald Strong, Chef/Owner, who hails from the birthplace of this delicious food, Pennsylvania. [caption id="attachment_3178" align="alignright" width="300"] Hot Hoagie from Yous Guys[/caption] And these cheesesteaks and hoagies, my friend, are the real thing – from Tuesday through Sunday from 7 am to 7 pm, you’ll find Donald cooking non-stop to fill many orders a day. He bakes his own bread for every sandwich. And he urges customers to “arrive early and call ahead to make sure the bread has not run out – since it is flying out the door as fast as we can bake it”. When the bread runs out, that’s it for the day,” says Donald. The Chef came to James Island years ago to escape the cold of the Northeast and to exchange it for the waters off Folly Beach. Scott and I were introduced to YOUS GUYS at lunchtime by loyal customers, Mimi and Jack MacNeish. Mimi knows a proper Philly sandwich when she sees it, having grown up in the City of Brotherly Love. She ordered the ANTIPASTA SALAD ($12) with arugula, basil, Prosciutto de Parma, capicola ham, salami, sharp Provolone cheese, pickled cherry peppers, mushrooms, shaved Grana Padama, tomato, onions, croutons, and vinegar. In other words, an Italian sandwich on leaves, she said. Scott ordered the CLASSIC CHEESESTEAK ($13), made from shaved beef ribeye seared with onions and topped with sharp Provolone cheese. Jack opted for the COLD HOAGIE ITALIAN ($13) with Prosciutto de Parma, capicola ham, salami, and sharp Provolone. And I enjoyed the ROAST BEEF HOAGIE ($13) served cold with sharp Provolone cheese. All hoagies, by the way, are served with arugula, tomato, onion, pickled cherry peppers, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, and oregano. And have I mentioned YOUS GUYS for breakfast? Order ahead from a selection of Donald’s BREAKFAST HOAGIES ($12): Select EGG AND CHEESE or BACON, EGG & CHEESE. Or choose PORK ROLL, EGG & CHEESE or SCRAPPLE, EGG & CHEESE or STEAK, EGG & CHEESE. Here are three more items that really intrigue me: the PIZZA STEAK with shaved ribeye or chicken pepperoni, Sunday gravy (red sauce), and sharp Provolone cheese. Or the CHICKEN MARSALA WITH CHICKEN BREAST cooked in Marsala wine with sharp Provolone and baby spinach. Or the COLD HOAGIE with smoked turkey breast and sharp provolone. You can also add a side: SEASONAL PASTA SALAD, potato chips, or a giant pickle. For vegetarians, there is the HOT VEGGIE ($13) with eggplant, mushrooms, red bell peppers, onions, arugula, and Sunday gravy with sharp Provolone cheese. Locate YOUS GUYS in a small cul de sac at 827 Folly Road between Chick-Fil-A and Sherwin Williams Paints. To order ahead and help Donald help you faster: Call 843-779-0145. A little History: Here’s where the expression “yous guys” came from: It’s a version of “you guys” used in the Northeast, especially metropolitan areas. The “s” in “yous” is NOT silent. Sort of an up-North you all. “Hoagie” originated in Philadelphia and means a sandwich containing Italian meat, cheese, and other fillings or condiments. It came from the World War One era when Italian immigrants, who worked at the Hog Island Shipyard, began making sandwiches originally called “Hoggies” before the name “hoagie” took hold. Hoagies are similar to what you may know as subs, heroes, or grinders. Not a bad lunch to take with you to work.
