Pigments and Painting Techniques in Renaissance Art (Monday, September 9th- September 30th at 11:00 a.m in Blackmer Hall)
This 4-week course will introduce students to pigments and painting techniques employed during the Renaissance (and medieval) periods. Students will learn about historical pigments, which originated from different parts of the world; some were derived from metals, others from plants and animals. The course includes live demonstrations of numerous pigments and different paint mediums (tempera, oil, and glair) during each class.

Week 1: White and Blue: Lead White, Bone White, Ultramarine Blue, Azurite, Indigo, Egyptian Blue (Monday, September 9th)
Week 2: Gold and Yellow: Gold Leaf, Shell Gold, Ocher, Saffron, Weld, Lead Tin Yellow (Monday, September 23rd)
Week 3: Black and Red: Vine Black, Lamp Black, Vermilion, Kermes, Brazilwood, Madder (Monday, September 30th)
Week 4: Brown and Green: Brown Ocher, Mummy, Green Earth, Malachite, Verdigris (Monday, October 21st)
