Residents volunteer at Bishop Gadsden in
numerous ways – from completely staffing the Village Shop to working with our
chaplain to assisting Resident Services in creating and updating the resident
pictorial directory. Numerous Charleston churches, hospitals and area
organizations also depend on residents from Bishop Gadsden for their expertise
and volunteer hours.
Bishop Gadsden’s current outreach ministry
is a partnership with the Charleston Area Senior Services, Inc. This
organization serves at-risk older adults of limited means in the Charleston
area. A benefit sponsored by Bishop Gadsden in September 2001 raised funds to
help renovate and refurbish the public areas in the Senior Services
residential facility. There are also plans improve the courtyard and
landscaping. Hands-on work by Bishop Gadsden resident and staff volunteers
will help accomplish these goals.
In 2000, Bishop Gadsden funded and built a
Habitat for Humanity House on nearby Johns Island. The 125 residents, staff
members, and friends who sawed, hammered and painted agreed that the
experience was one of life's most rewarding!
We continue to welcome large audiences from the greater Charleston community
for a range of cultural and educational events presented at Bishop Gadsden,
including the Charleston Symphony Chamber Series, Piccolo Spoleto concerts,
the Annual Community Wellness Fair and monthly wellness lectures.
