History, Mission & Vision: 157 Year Heritage

In 1850, the vision of Bishop Christopher Gadsden of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina led to the founding of the first Episcopal home in Charleston, South Carolina. The community's goal has always been to provide the finest housing and services possible for older adults. When the "Church Home" facility located in the center of the city proved no longer adequate in the 1980s, a new state-of-the-art Life Care community was envisioned. Ground was broken in 1985, soon after St. James Episcopal Church donated a wooded site on James Island located ten minutes from Charleston's historic district. The new community was named in honor of its founder, Bishop Gadsden.

Having spent the first 135 years creating a reputation for excellence, Bishop Gadsden Community has seen astonishing growth during the past 21 years.

Now one of the premier retirement communities in the Southeast, Bishop Gadsden is the only non-profit, church sponsored LIFE CARE retirement community in South Carolina. It is home to 450 residents and employs over 300 staff members. One of only 6% of church-sponsored retirement communities in the United States that consider "resident assistance" a priority, the non-profit community funds this vital ministry solely through charitable gifts. An all-volunteer Board of Trustees provides guidance for the administration and defines policies for Bishop Gadsden Community.
