Bishop Gadsden residents are recognized for their on- and off-campus volunteer efforts through the Bishop Gadsden Generous Spirit Program. This program provides the opportunity to involve Bishop Gadsden residents and staff in programs that affect the greater Charleston community and does not require monetary contributions.

How the Generous Spirit Program Works:

Individual Activities. Resident Generous Spirit Forms will be placed on the Activity Table for you to complete when volunteering in the community. A sample is on the other side and can be used either each time you volunteer or, if more convenient, on a monthly basis. These forms should be submitted to the Office of Development & Communications, where we will track, compile, and then publish the results in our Annual Reports.

Bishop Gadsden Activities. In addition to your individual activities, Bishop Gadsden will sponsor joint volunteer activities. These activities may be off or on-campus, and residents are encouraged to bring volunteer ideas to the Office of Development & Communications. Staff may be able to earn time-off for volunteer activities, a benefit modeled after many other corporate giving programs.

Through programs such as the Generous Spirit Program, we go out to the community, as much as people come in to ours. Community and church groups sponsor themed happy hours; visit with residents; host holiday parties; coordinate games and Bible studies; and help residents with shopping. We welcome performances from artistic and cultural groups. We also have internships for students interested in the geriatrics field; many of our interns become future employees.

Outreach Committee.
A resident-driven group focused on service projects in the greater Charleston area, the Outreach Committee does major fundraising for a "Charity Partner" selected annually.

Residents' Council.
Comprised of seven active committees, the Residents' Council works to ensure that Bishop Gadsden residents are informed and have the opportunity for input.

Myers Hall Resident Volunteers.
This group assists throughout Bishop Gadsden, such as organizing Kindness Club projects for Children's Hospital and the Ansonborough House; helping with bingo; writing and editing for The Gab, our resident newsletter; managing the Library; and arranging flowers.

Eliza's Attic and the Village Shop.
Supported by more than 40 resident volunteers, our retail establishments raise money for the Resident Assistance Fund. It is open Thursday and Friday from 1:00 - 3:30pm and Saturdays from 10:00am - 2:00pm and always has a sale going on.
  Senior Mentor Program.
Residents serve as mentors for students at the Medical University of South Carolina to enhance their education and improve quality of care for senior patients.

Samaritans of Service.
This resident group helps other residents with day-to-day activities, such as dog walking, delivering meals, and watering plants.

Bishop Gadsden Cancer Support Group.
Organized by residents, this group brings in speakers and provides a support system for residents with cancer.
